Tension During Nagar Kirtan in Auckland, Police Intervention Prevents Escalation

Tense moments were witnessed today in Auckland, New Zealand, during a Nagar Kirtan organised in remembrance of the Shaheedi Fortnight. The Nagar Kirtan, dedicated to the martyrs of the month of Poh, was organised by Gurdwara Nanaksar Thath Ishar Darbar in Manurewa and saw a large turnout of the Sikh sangat. While the procession was proceeding smoothly, its return route on Great South Road was blocked by around 80 to 100 disruptive youths. The group reportedly performed the Haka and displayed hate-filled slogans opposing the Nagar Kirtan, creating a tense atmosphere. Sources indicate that these individuals belong to a particular group that has been opposing various religious and ethnic communities in New Zealand in recent times. Demonstrating patience and restraint, the organisers temporarily halted the Nagar Kirtan. Police soon arrived at the scene, formed a security cordon, and cleared a safe passage for the procession. The Nagar Kirtan then safely returned to the Gurdwara without any major incident. Reacting to the incident, representatives of the Supreme Sikh Society and the President of the Sikh Association New Zealand, Daljit Singh Hona, also expressed their concerns.
