The Martyrdom of Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji and the Cremation of the Bodies

Due to the treachery of Gangu Brahmin, Mata Gujri Kaur Ji and the younger Sahibzadas (Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji) were sent from the Morinda police post to Sirhind into the custody of Wazir Khan. On this night, Mata Gujri Kaur Ji spent time with the younger Sahibzadas in captivity at Sirhind, in the Cold Tower, and accepted the Divine Will with humility and grace. When Wazir Khan received news of the arrest of Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzadas, he believed that he would now be able to force Guru Sahib to submit before him—an illusion of great magnitude. On the morning of the 10th of Poh, Mata Ji and the Guru’s sons were brought from the Morinda police post to Sirhind and imprisoned in the Cold Tower. This Cold Tower was known to remain cool even during summers. Mata Ji and the Sahibzadas endured an extremely cold night there, yet they did not abandon patience and gratitude. This cruelty was inflicted upon Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzadas by the governor of Sirhind on this very day. The Martyrdom of Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji and the Cremation of the Singhs On the other side, after the fierce battle at the fort of Chamkaur Sahib, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, following the command and request of the Five Beloved Ones, proceeded towards the forests of Machhiwara, while the Mughal forces established their camps around the fort. Orders had also been issued to search for Guru Sahib in nearby villages, and Mughal troops were guarding the fort throughout the night. Upon learning about the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib and the martyrdoms that occurred there, Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji, a devoted follower connected to the lotus feet of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, sought permission from her mother and resolved to perform the last rites of the elder Sahibzadas and the Singhs who were martyred at Chamkaur Sahib. Under the cover of darkness, she reached near the fort of Chamkaur. At that time, Mughal troops were stationed around the fort. With unwavering faith in Guru Sahib, Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji searched for and gathered the sacred bodies of the martyred elder Sahibzadas and Singhs. She prepared a funeral pyre and performed the cremation of the elder Sahibzadas and the other Singhs together. Afterward, she began reciting Gurbani. Upon seeing the burning pyre, the Mughal army advanced in that direction. When they realized what was happening, they attacked Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji. She resisted courageously, but after being wounded, she fell to the ground. The Mughal soldiers then threw Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji alive into the burning pyre and consigned her to the flames. Thus, the unparalleled martyrdom and sacrifice of Bibi Harsharan Kaur Ji shall remain immortal for eternity, and the entire world will continue to take pride in it.
