Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Saakhi at Haridwar: The True Meaning of Faith

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Haridwar during his Udasis (spiritual journeys), he witnessed a strange ritual being performed on the banks of the Ganga. Countless people stood facing the rising sun, scooping water from the sacred river, and throwing it towards the east. Out of curiosity, Guru Ji asked them why they were doing this. The people explained that the water was being offered as tarpan (tribute) to their ancestors, who resided in the heavens. They believed that the water, thrown towards the east, would travel across thousands of miles and reach their forefathers in the other world. Listening to this explanation, Guru Nanak Dev Ji smiled. To reveal the hollowness of such blind faith, He decided to act in His own way. Guru Ji too began scooping water from the Ganga, but instead of throwing it eastwards, He started pouring it westwards. The onlookers were puzzled and began to laugh. They asked Guru Ji, “What are you doing? Why are you throwing water in the opposite direction?” Guru Ji calmly replied, “I am watering my fields in Punjab. If your offerings can reach your ancestors thousands of miles away in the heavens, why can’t my water reach my fields, which are much closer to Haridwar?” This logical yet profound answer stunned the people. They suddenly realized how meaningless their ritual was. Guru Ji then explained to them that true devotion lies not in empty rituals but in righteous deeds, pure thoughts, and truthful living. Key Teachings of This Saakhi: Rejection of Empty Rituals: Rituals without meaning or awareness bring no spiritual gain. Power of Reason and Knowledge: Faith should always walk hand-in-hand with wisdom and rational thought. Abandonment of Blind Belief: True spirituality comes from truth, not from superstition. Inner Purity Over Outer Show: God values sincerity, humility, and honest living, not outward displays. This timeless Saakhi continues to inspire us even today, teaching us to question blind customs and embrace a life of truth, simplicity, and meaningful devotion.
