Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Jati Das — three brothers from Village Kiriala, District Jhelum, were the sons of Bhai Praga Ji, who served as a commander in the army of Guru Hargobind Sahib. When Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Sati Das visited Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib with their father, they did not return home and dedicated their lives to Guru’s service. Guru Sahib appointed them as ministers — Bhai Mati Das as the court minister and Bhai Sati Das as the household minister. During Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib’s preaching tours in Bihar, Bengal and Assam, these three — Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Dayala (elder brother of Bhai Mani Singh) — accompanied the Guru. Bhai Sati Das was a well-learned Persian scholar and wrote letters, hukamnamas, and scriptures for Guru Sahib. When Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib traveled to Delhi to defend the oppressed Hindus against forced religious conversions, these Sikhs followed him to Delhi. When the Mughal regime ordered Guru Sahib’s execution, all three remained by his side with unwavering faith. Before the execution, a drum was beaten throughout the city to frighten people, and a huge crowd gathered. First, Bhai Mati Das was asked to accept Islam. Upon refusal, he was sentenced to be sawed alive into two parts. Blood flowed everywhere, yet his meditation did not break — his lips continued reciting “Waheguru” until his last breath. Next, Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton and set on fire. He accepted martyrdom smiling, thanking Waheguru even while burning. Bhai Dayala Ji was later thrown into a boiling cauldron and made to sit inside. His body burned in boiling water, but he kept reciting Japji Sahib until his last breath and attained martyrdom — without ever abandoning Sikh faith.
