Gurdwara Sri Sukhchainaana Sahib, Sixth Patshahi, Phagwara

This sacred place is blessed with the holy presence of the Sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. In Samvat 1691 (1634 AD), after the fourth battle of Kartarpur, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the Master of Miri-Piri, reached Palahi Sahib. There, a clash took place with Mughal forces, who eventually fled in fear. A devotee named Faggu used to remember Guru Sahib often. Guru Sahib said, “Let us go to Faggu’s enclosure and rest.” When Guru Sahib arrived at the house of Faggu Chaudhary, he learned that Guru Ji was returning after a battle with the Mughals. He became frightened and, out of fear, did not serve Guru Sahib. Guru Ji understood his fear and naturally remarked — “Faggu’s enclosure is sweet from the outside but salty from the inside.” After this, Guru Sahib came to this spot, which at that time was a forested area. Here, under a beri tree, Guru Sahib rested and experienced peace and comfort — ‘Sukh-Chain’. In memory of this divine event, the Gurdwara Sukhchainaana Sahib now stands beautifully at this place. Every year, on 3rd July, a grand annual fair (Jor Mela) is held here. The Guru’s Langar runs continuously for 24 hours. — Arminder Singh
