Mata Tripta said to the maid, “Tulsa, go and wake Nanak. The food and prasad are ready.” The maid went, but wondered how she should wake him. The True Guru was in a very deep sleep. According to the Janam Sakhi, the maid placed the Guru’s thumb in her mouth. The touch of his holy feet awakened a completely different spiritual experience within her. She came back and said, “Mother! Nanak Ji is not here; he seems to have gone somewhere.” Mata Tripta then said, “Look! The world used to say that my son is crazy; now the maidservants have also become crazy. These girls have completely lost their senses.” At that moment the maid folded her hands and said, “No mother! Today I have actually gained true awareness. You are calling me crazy today? If you had said that earlier it might have been fine, but today I have truly gained consciousness. Please do not call me crazy now.” Her words were unique. What she spoke seemed different from what she truly experienced. Just by touching the Guru’s thumb, everything had changed. The True Guru even sleeps in full awareness. His consciousness is so deep that no bad dream can disturb him, and he remains aware of everything around him. Even in sleep, complete spiritual knowledge remains with him. It is said that the one whose every pore is filled with the divine essence carries blessings in their hands. That is why the tradition of giving blessings began: “Deho sajan aaseesriaa jio hovai sahib sio mel.” (Gauree Deepkee, Mehla 1, Ang 12) In reality, this is the greatest blessing. All other blessings are small in comparison: “Poota mataa kee aasees. Nimakh na bisrau tum kau Har Har Sadaa bhajahu Jagdees.” (Goojri Mehla 5, Ang 696) The greatest blessing is that you always remember God, that you continuously meditate on the Divine, and that the remembrance of the Guru always remains in your heart. This blessing is so great that it contains all blessings within it. It is such a great grace that it includes every blessing. Where the remembrance of God exists, there is no suffering, no sorrow, and no worry. There is only bliss, joy, and spiritual delight. — Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen
