Baba Ram Rai was born in 1646 in the Sikh's seventh Guru Har Rai Ji's house, Sheesh Mahal (Kirtapur). He was Guru Ji's eldest son and had been practicing yoga from a young age. When someone complained to Aurangzeb that the Sikh's sacred scripture criticizes Muslims, Aurangzeb called Guru Har Rai Ji to Delhi. Guru Ji himself did not go but sent Baba Ram Rai in his place. When Baba Ram Rai met Aurangzeb, Aurangzeb asked him why the Granth Sahib criticizes Muslims using the following verse as an example: "Mitti Mussalman Ki Pedhe Paee Kumiyaar Ghad Bhande Ittaan Kiaa Jaldi Kare Pukar Jal Jal Hovai Bapuri Jhar Jhar Pave Angiaar Nanak Jihi Kartaai Kaaran Kiaa, So Jaane Kartaar" (Shri Guru Granth Sahib page 466). Baba Ram Rai told Aurangzeb that instead of the word 'Mussalman' the word 'Beiman' is written. It was a scribe's error that the word Muslim was written by mistake. This upset Guru Har Rai Ji very much and he told Ram Rai not to show his face again. So, instead of coming to Punjab, Baba Ram Rai headed towards Uttarakhand. Fateh Shah, the king of Srinagar (Uttarakhand), was his well-wisher. He gave him the jagir (land) of Dehradun. Dehradun was a dense jungle inhabited by tigers at that time. Baba Ji settled there in 1676. It is said that wherever Baba Ji's horse stepped, there he planted a flag. The day Baba Ji arrived here is also the day of his birthday, hence a huge fair is held there. Baba Ram Rai was a high-ranking yogi. The highest state of yoga is called Niravikalpa Samadhi, in which a yogi leaves his body and returns after some time. Once Baba Ram Rai told his wife Mata Punjab Kaur that he was going to enter Niravikalpa Samadhi and no one should disturb him. He went into his room and locked the door from the inside. After quite some time, when he didn't come back to his body, the greedy priests declared that he had died. Their eye was on his property. Mata Punjab Kaur tried a lot to explain to them that he often goes into such samadhi and he will return after some time but they did not agree. They broke down the door and cremated his body. When Baba Ji came back and saw his body being cremated, he was shocked. He cursed the priests that just as they had burned him alive, they too would be burned alive. This incident happened in 1687. The Tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji was in Paonta Sahib at that time. Mata Punjab Kaur complained to the Tenth Guru. Guru Ji came to Dehradun and burned the priests alive in hot oil.
