Gurgaddi Diwas Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji

The Guruship Day of Sri Guru Ram Das Ji marks one of the most significant milestones in Sikh history. On 1st September 1574, Guru Amar Das Ji bestowed the sacred Guruship upon Guru Ram Das Ji. This historic transition not only carried forward the spiritual mission of the Sikh Gurus but also opened a new era of humility, service, and divine connection. Before his Guruship, Guru Ram Das Ji was known as Bhai Jetha, remembered for his tireless service, devotion, and deep spiritual commitment. Guru Ram Das Ji is best known for his humility and selfless dedication. He exemplified the Sikh values of seva (selfless service) and simran (remembrance of the Divine). His hymns, now enshrined in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, emphasize love, humility, and the path of devotion. His composition of the Laavaan hymns, which form the central part of the Sikh wedding ceremony (Anand Karaj), reflects his profound spiritual insight — teaching that marriage is not merely a social bond but a spiritual union that leads the soul closer to the Divine. Another towering contribution of Guru Ram Das Ji was the founding of the holy city of Amritsar and the laying of the foundation of the Harmandir Sahib (later known as the Golden Temple). His vision was to create a spiritual center that would be open to people of all backgrounds, a place that embodied equality, humility, and devotion. Amritsar soon became not only a religious hub but also a center of social and economic life for the Sikh community. Guryai Divas reminds us that Guruship in Sikhism is not based on lineage or inheritance but on spiritual worth, humility, and service. Guru Ram Das Ji was chosen because of his deep devotion and ability to guide the community with compassion and wisdom. His life continues to inspire millions to embrace humility, serve humanity, and remain devoted to the Divine. Today, celebrating Guryai Divas is more than remembering a historical event; it is about reconnecting with the timeless values of Sikhism. It is a call to live a life guided by Gurbani, to engage in service without ego, and to build communities based on equality and compassion. Guru Ram Das Ji’s Guruship Day is thus both a historical landmark and a living inspiration for Sikhs worldwide.
